How many steps is the Eiffel Tower?
1,665 steps from the ground to the top, but you can only climb 674 of them. The stairs run as far as the second floor — 327 to the first, then 347 more — and the staircase above it has not been open to the public since 1983.
The tower publishes the breakdown itself. When it opened in 1889 the stairs were the only way up: 360 steps from the ground to the first floor, a narrow spiral of 380 more to the second, and above that a single-guardrail staircase of 1,062 steps that the public was never allowed on because it was not considered safe.
Those lower flights were rebuilt and widened since, so today the same climb is 327 then 347 — 674 steps. The spiral above the second floor was dismantled in 1983; a section of the original is on display on the first floor. To reach the top you take the lift.
Which is why quoted answers disagree. 1,665 is the whole structure, including a staircase nobody has climbed in forty years. 674 is the climb you can actually buy a ticket for, and the cheapest way into the tower.
