1,776 steps to the LookOut level, which WWF-Canada — who run the official climb — put at about 100 floors of an ordinary building. You cannot climb them whenever you like: the staircase is an emergency exit, opened to the public only for organised charity climbs a couple of times a year.
1,776 is a coincidence worth enjoying and nothing more — the tower opened in 1976, and the number has no relationship to the year on the American declaration. It is simply how many steps fit into 1,136 feet of metal staircase.
The climbs are the only way up them. WWF-Canada’s Climb for Nature and the United Way’s ClimbUP take over the stairwell for a day each; most participants finish in thirty to forty minutes, and the record sits under ten. The rest of the year it is a fire exit.
Carried up, your iPhone would record about 114 flights rather than 1,776 anything — Apple Health counts ten feet of ascent as a flight, so it measures the height and ignores the stairs entirely. That is more than the Empire State Building’s observatory climb and roughly double the Washington Monument.
